The Impact

Won 3rd place amongst 230 teams through an online event. Presented in front of 3 judges and over 1500 audience members to present the prototype and receive a monetary award. The organizers of the event also donated $600 to a non-profit organization as part of the award.

What I learned

Lean UX Approach Next Time

Due to the nature of the competition with its super short timelines. The research was something that my team and I might have spent a bit too much time on when we should have focused on building. Research can come afterwards in terms of validating the usability of the product.

Delegate Strengths

I learned how to leverage my team members’ strengths by defining their roles based on their past experience, current skills, and their natural inclination for design.

This was a group effort

With 4 designers, my role was Team Leader and Interaction Designer.

The Challenge

Create a mobile app that helps mobilize youth leaders working towards equity.

How might we provide a more intuitive experience for Asian immigrant women on starting their own business?

The Solution

A mobile app that enables young Korean-Canadian entrepreneurs to expand their network through live video conversations where they can find like-minded entrepreneurs and share resources to start or grow their business.

Design & Content Coordinator @ CRL

I think this app is beautiful.

It is really comforting and friendly. There was a very set tone established really well. It was backed by the writing, the design, and the flow. Very strong.

Discover - Define - Design

As Team Leader I went with the approach of a very simple design process due to our constraint of 7 days to complete a prototype from scratch.

Brainstorming

With the limited amount of time for the project, I utilized a mind map exercise to lay out all of the assumptions around the problem with the team.

Insight

Uncovered a powerful insight around Korean mental health problems being passed down to each generation. Entrepreneurship is a game of mental rigour.

Insight

Through this competition, I learned how to plan and execute each role for my team by gathering and prioritizing the requirements we needed to focus on and clearly defining our vision for our platform.
